Marrakesh was the last stop on our Intrepid tour and it didn’t disappoint.
Marrakesh is an assault on the senses. The city is almost 1000 years old and is home to some of the most amazing minarets, sandstone buildings, high red walls circling the city and of course the famous souks (the markets) which is where I spent most of my time with out Intrepid tourers.
The markets are everything they are reputed to be. Loud, busy, slightly dangerous, snake charmers, henna artists, story tellers, fortune tellers, slick salesmen, pyramids of spices and anything you can think of to buy!
It’s sometimes hard to know where to look. Don’t take too much interest in a snake charmer, you will be asked to pay for the privilege to watch. Don’t put your camera up to take a photo of the Moroccan Water Sellers you will be asked to contribute some dirim.
The stalls were fascinating, colourful, aromatic (sometimes not good!), in vast numbers with everything you can think of to buy and more. I took a free style walk around the markets and made any number of purchases at a bargain price (or not – who can tell) but I then signed up for an additional tour being offered by Intrepid to get a better insight into the souk, the traditions and the foods which made the experience much richer!

Marrakesh Market – the local people
Taking a photo of people in Morocco is generally not liked, so catching those candid shots of people is difficult. To overcome this, a friend and I made our way to one of the cafes upstairs in the markets, sat ourselves on the verandah, ordered a fantastic Moroccan dish and got our cameras ready for some candid market shots. It worked pretty well except there was a lot of ‘zoom’ use! Have a look at the result below.
This is the tour I took with Intrepid
Just a note that I traveled independently on this tour. Intrepid were unaware that I would write a review of the tip. I thoroughly recommend it!
